The young Nigerian accused of attempting to bomb a transatlantic airliner on Christmas Day was recruited by al Qaeda in London, Yemen's government claimed today.
Umar Farouk Abdulmuttalab joined the terror group during his three years as a student at University College, the country's deputy prime minister told a news conference this afternoon.
The claim came hours after U.S. authorities charged 23-year-old Abdulmuttalab with the alleged terrorist with six offences including attempted murder and trying to use a weapon of mass destruction to kill nearly 300 people.
A Home Office spokesman insisted no new information about the suspect's links to Islamic militants in Britain had been uncovered.
The spokesman added that Abdulmuttalab views only became serious after he left the UK in 2008.
But Rashad al-Alimi, Yemen's deputy prime minister for defence and security, told a news conference In the capital Sana'a: 'The information provided to us is that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab joined al Qaeda in London

He also revealed that Abdulmutallab had met with radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen.
American-born al-Awlaki has been linked to U.S. Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, the alleged gunman who accused of killing 13 soldiers at Fort Hood in November.
It was also claimed that Abdulmuttalab aquired the explosives used in the failed attack over Detroit during a stop-over in Lagos, Nigeria.
The alleged bomber flew from Accra, Ghana, on December 24, and transited the airport in Lagos, Nigeria, on his way to board the Detroit-bound Northwest Airlines flight in Amsterdam.

  4. If anything the U.K should be on that list, cos it seems alotta 'terrorists' breed there but ofcourse it is all politics. The U.S wouldn't DARE to blacklist their ally.

  5. Nigeria was jus an easy blame for the terrorism ish this time...

  6. They just wont admit it. The whole world knows Nigerians do not behave that way. We love life so much that we wont think of killing others, then ourselves.

Let the western world say what they want about us, we will come out stronger

  7. On the US revised terror list which includes Nigeria, I still cannot understand why 150 million people should be held to ransom for one man's action . . . however the blame still rests on our government. They have rubbished our nation politically and so we have lost all the respect we should command. Until something is done about the leadership of this country, the insults would continue. . . and to think that in spite of all these, the nation still has an absentee president? What a shame!
